Facial Eczema

Causes

Alpacas are infected with Facial Eczema when they eat Pithomyces chartarum (fungus) as it contains a poison.

Note

Sometimes, sudden death does occur and symptoms may be subtle.

Symptoms

See your veteranarian for treatment if your camelid has the following symptoms.

• Skin Irritation
• Crusting and oozing of ears and nose
• Decreased growth rates in small animals
• Spontaneous abortions

Treatment

If your alpaca does have Facial Eczema, then give them zinc supplements as this helps fight off the disease.
